Islamic historiography was founded upon a body of reports and narratives transmitted by the akhbārīs (traditionists) and transmitters of the first Islamic centuries, on which later historians based their historical works. Among these early transmitters, ʿAwāna ibn al-Ḥakam al-Kalbī (d. 158/775), a Kūfan akhbārī, played a significant role in the transition of Islamic historiography from tribal monographs to comprehensive historical writing. A substantial portion of the reports on the first Islamic century was transmitted to later historical sources through his narratives. Despite his importance, no independent study has yet been devoted to his historiography or to a systematic analysis of his narratives. Accordingly, the main objective of this article is to identify ʿAwāna’s historiographical outlook and to explain its reflection in his accounts of early Islamic history. To this end, by collecting and analyzing ʿAwāna’s narratives preserved in third- and fourth-century AH historical sources, this study addresses the following question: What are the principal components of ʿAwāna ibn al-Ḥakam’s historiographical outlook? The study adopts the historical method, examining the relationship between his narratives and the political and cultural context of his time. The findings indicate that accuracy in the transmission of reports, a comprehensive perspective, attention to detail, and relative moderation in narrating historical events constitute the principal characteristics of his historiography.
