This article examines the relationship between contemporary Arab historiography and Orientalist discourse, with an emphasis on the approach of Jawad Ali. This issue is of particular importance because historiography has always been influenced by external intellectual currents. From the nineteenth century onward, Orientalism influenced not only linguistic and cultural studies but also the methods of Arab historiography, provoking diverse responses among Arab intellectuals. Some have regarded it as an instrument of domination and an unfair representation of the East, while others have benefited from its scholarly achievements. Among these, Jawad Ali, as one of the most prominent Arab historians, has sought to present a more accurate, fairer, and more historically grounded image of the Arabs in his major works such as Al-Mufaṣṣal fī Tārīkh al-ʿArab Qabl al-Islām and Tārīkh al-ʿArab fī al-Islām. By drawing on ancient Arabic texts and archaeological findings, he has filled historical gaps. The present article demonstrates that Jawad Ali, while being aware of Orientalist methods and data, adopted a critical stance against their ideological and reductionist presuppositions. Relying on Islamic sources, Arab identity, and a critical analysis of Western narratives, he seeks to reconstruct Arab history from a more indigenous and scientific perspective. Thus, this research not only clarifies the impact of Orientalism on Arab historiography but also illuminates Jawad Ali's position in the critique and reconsideration of this tradition, and reminds us of the necessity of critically revisiting the Orientalist legacy in the contemporary intellectual space.
